Chulangani Vihara

Turning off the main Wellawaya-Buttala highway, we were heading to Yudagannawa Dagoba – that huge mass of brick which is now being restored. A glade of trees first attracted our attention and as we approached closer we saw a small delightful moss covered brick-built chaitya and several other structures typical of a small vihara complex.

Lying on the floor of the image house, were three stone torsos, also green with moss. The vihara dates back to the 12th century, while the Buddha images date back to the 6th-7th century.

While rushing down the stairs Chris reached out and grabbed the keys lying on the banister wall without looking. He felt something soft and dashed it on the floor. Called le mapilla by the men of the village, it was later released into the grassland.
