Isurumuniya

Photography-Nihal Fernando

Isurumuniya is probably the most beautifully-sited shrine in Anuradhapura. The monastery to which the shrine belonged received its name from the 500 nobles (issaras: those of first rank) who – filled with the faith by the miracles attendant on the planting of the Bodhi tree – sought immediate ordination as monks. - The Handbook for the Ceylon Traveller, a Studio Times Publication

The carvings are located on the rock face above the pool.

Badulla

Photography-Anu Weerasuriya

The capital of the Uva Province is Badulla. Unlike other Kandyan citites, Badulla was occupied by the Portuguese who, in characteristic style, set fire to it. The fort and ramparts which are found today in the heart of the town speak of continued foreign occupation. So also the pretty little Anglican church built by the British and the very interesting cemetery cum botanical garden where the bones of the elephant-killer Major Roberts (who was struck dead by lightening) lie buried. - The Handbook for the Ceylon Traveller, a Studio Times Publication
